Hyaluronic Acid 2%

In my last post I described my The Ordinary regime for my oily acne prone 37 year old skin. I’m using 10% Niacinamide + 1% Zinc, 23% Vitamin C Suspension, Buffet and Lactic Acid 10%. Here’s how I got on with each of them-

The Ordinary Skincare- My Experience After 5 Weeks Use

I spend a lot longer in the bathroom these days applying these various serums which is a bit of a pain. If I hadn’t seen results I probably would have knocked it on the head. Have a read of my Other The Ordinary post to find out a bit more about the products. This is how I felt about each of them after using them thoroughly-

Vitamin C 23% Suspension– I didn’t get on so well with this stuff. It creates a weird powdery greasy film, not all that comfortable to have on your face. The other odd thing about 23% Vitamin C is that it oxidises leaving orange stains on pillows and towels. I had to stop using it as a regular face cream. Now I use it as abrightening mask. I leave it on for a few minutes to absorb then rinse off before applying the rest of the serums. It does sting rather, but that means it’s working so I can deal with that. Vitamin C is an anti aging powerhouse, so it’s well worth incorporating into your beauty regimen. I just found this suspension a little tricky to get on with.

Lactic Acid 10%+HA 2%-Now this is a different story. I didn’t use it for the first few days of my The Ordinary regime because I felt the Vitamin C was acid enough. When I started using this the immediate transformation in my skin was obvious. I use it once daily at nighttime and the next day my skin feels smooth as a baby’s. I haven’t had a zit since I started using it either. I normally always have a lovely selection of small spots and at least one large chin spot. Since starting Lactic Acid 10%, I have had no blemishes at all. I’m blown away by it and recommending it to everyone. I would expect a product that stings like this one does to leave my face dead dry. But I have experienced no drying or soreness at all using Lactic Acid.

Niacinamide 10%+Zinc 1%– I’m sure this has helped with my acne. It helps to calm inflammation so it’s a good pair for the Lactic Acid serum. The Zinc is meant to help control oil production but in all honesty I haven’t noticed that. The Ordinary serums leave my face pretty shiny so I have to use a fair bit of powder on top to control shine. I use Niacinamide 10% serum morning and night. Niacinamide is a good addition to a skincare regime for oily or sensitive skin. It doesn’t give the dramatic results that Lactic Acid does, but I’m sure it helps.

Buffet Multi Technology Peptide Serum– I have been using Buffet morning and night mainly on my crinkly under eye area. I’m not sure it has done anything for me yet. My under eye is still pretty crinkly. At £12.70 for a serum containing a huge list of proven anti aging peptides and thingys, Buffet is definitely a bargain. You could spend quadruple that for an anti wrinkle cream with half the active ingredients.

I really think that it was the Lactic Acid that made all the difference to my skin. I’m sure everything else helps too. I’m really happy with the results. I would have expected any skincare to take way longer than 5 weeks to be effective (and honestly I was using the Lactic Acid for only 3weeks). I was most surprised to find that The Ordinary had cleared my acne in such a short space of time.

The long and short of it is that The Ordinary is a breath of fresh air. The Ordinary skincare is effective, cheap and transparent with it’s ingredients. And as you can see by the photos above, it works.

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% Review

I’ve been relatively happy with my skincare routine. No breakouts, no irritation, an entire winter without any red or cracking skin. However, my pores have looked larger, my skin doesn’t feel as soft, I look a bit more… haggard. And everywhere I read where people had that issue they used Sunday Riley’s Good Genes and their skin was suddenly amazing. Well, Good Genes costs over $100 and I couldn’t justify such a cost unless it was life-changing amazeballs. I read a few places that The Ordinary’s Lactic Acid was a dupe for Good Genes and with one bottle costing less than $7 that was more my speed for a beauty risk.

I have used lactic acid before, though not at this concentration. I was never consistent so I didn’t see any radical changes. This product arrived, I washed my face as usual, applied maybe a third of an eyedropper of the lactic acid to my face, brushed my teeth to give it time to absorb, and then added my night cream. No burning, no irritation. I woke up… and my skin looked markedly better. I have NEVER had such immediate results with a product! Skin was more glowy, looked and felt softer, and my pores looked less visible. Since I have pretty sturdy skin I tried it again the next night and the next day again woke up with happier skin. After a few days, all the little tiny bumps on my chin disappeared. I have now used The Ordinary’s Lactic Acid off and on for four weeks and it’s been a gamechanger. I usually wait six weeks before a review but since the results were so dramatic I figured this wasn’t so bad. If it ends up being horrible, I’ll be sure to update with a revised review.

The Ordinary’s products are vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated without oil, alcohol, silicone, nuts, gluten, and fragrance. They are also free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.

While I amassed quite a haul from the brand, today’s skin care review focuses on two items – The Ordinary 10% Lactic Acid + HA 2% and the 10% Azelaic Acid, because you can never have too many acids in your skin care arsenal.

What’s Not In The Ordinary Lactic Acid and Azelaic Acid?

All Deciem products are free of parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, animal oils, benzalkonium chloride, coal tar dyes, formaldehyde, mercury and oxybenzone, and are not tested on animals.

These serums are alcohol-free, silicone-free, nut-free and vegan.

What is Lactic Acid?

Lactic acid is a form of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the skin for a smoother, brighter appearance.

While effective, lactic acid is not as strong as glycolic acid, making it a great starter acid for newbies or people with more sensitive skin.

The Ordinary has lactic acid serums in 5% and 10% strengths.

The formulation also includes Tasmanian Pepperberry, which the company claims will reduce the inflammation and sensitivity that some people may experience with chemical exfoliation.

2% hyaluronic acid (HA) is mixed in to boost the skin’s ability to retain moisture and contributes to skin plumpness (yes please!).

What Is Lactic Acid Good For?

Lactic acid is great for exfoliation and reducing hyper-pigmentation, texture, congested skin and fine lines.

If you have sensitive skin, the lactic acid will be gentler on your skin than the glycolic acid 7% toning solution from the brand.

If you are new to acids, start with the 5% lactic acid serum and then work up to the 10% formula.

How To Use The Ordinary Lactic Acid In Your Skin Care Routine

Given my long-time history using acids, I went all the way and opted for the 10% strength.

The Ordinary lactic acid serum is intended for use in your night time skin care routine before you apply your creams or facial oils and after you cleanse your skin.

The website doesn’t really give you much more direction than that, but I like to apply 2-3 drops to my face after double cleansing at night as my exfoliation step, before my hydrating toner, treatments and face cream.

If you normally use an acid toner in your routine, don’t use it at the same time as you use the lactic acid serum – it will be too much exfoliation and can cause irritation.

Vitamin C and retinol can also cause irritation if applied after using the lactic acid serum.

A dropper/pipette is provided to dispense the orange-tinted, water-based serum.

Once applied to the skin, it absorbs quickly and leaves no residue behind.

In spite of the 10% strength, I didn’t experience any tingling or burning after application and had no irritation either (thank you Tasmanian Pepperberry!).

Was it effective?

Yes – my skin did feel softer, looked smoother and more even overall after using this serum regularly.

The website claimed that this acid would be fast working, but I didn’t notice any difference over night and found that continued use was more effective.

Would I repurchase? I don’t think so. Since I’m pretty experienced with acids, I think I’d like to go with a stronger one next time around.

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% – $7.90CDN

What Is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is derived from wheat, rye and barley and is naturally produced by the skin’s microbiome.

It also acts as an antioxidant to protect skin from damage.

What’s Azelaic Acid Good For?

Azelaic acid is also great for unclogging pores, killing bacteria and reducing acne and is safe for use during pregnancy when retinol has to be avoided.

The Ordinary markets this product as a way to brighten skin, reduce blemishes and improve skin texture, but I feel like they really undersold all the benefits of this stuff!

It’s also great for skin types suffering from rosacea and redness because it reduces inflammation.

How To Use The Ordinary Azelaic Acid In Your Routine

The website directs you to apply this morning or night (with sunscreen if in the morning) before your heavy creams or facial oils.

The Ordinary azelaic acid is a white, opaque, odourless cream that absorbs super fast into the skin. I like to apply it after I cleanse, exfoliate, tone and treat.

I find it best to apply a large pea-sized amount in dabs all over my face to make sure I can spread it out before it starts to absorb; it’s that fast.

Although it has “acid” in the title, this did not tingle or burn at all; great for people new to acid use.

It doesn’t leave any residue on the skin, just a smooth, matte finish that makes it great under makeup as well.

Just be careful when using it with retinol or vitamin C, as it could cause irritation when applied in the same sitting.

Was it effective? Hell yes!

After using this product for the first time, I noticed that my skin did look more even (e.g. less red) and smoother overall by the next morning.

I continued to use this product each night and found it made my skin look healthier and more radiant as I went.

The only negatives I have is that it comes in a cream instead of a serum; I have a love affair with serums so I guess this is a small personal bias.

The amount you get is also minimal (30mL) so I can see this product reducing at a fast pace (thank God it’s cheap!).

Nonetheless, a great product at an amazing price and probably my favourite item from The Ordinary so far.

Would I repurchase? Oh yeah.
